Objective
In this guide I will show you how to buy Monero (XMR) on LocalMonero Android app. If you don't have LocalMonero app installed on your Android device, you can follow this guide to do so: LocalMonero Setup (Android)
Using LocalMonero you can purchase Monero from the sellers in your locale. On LocalMonero you can find sellers who do not ask for invasive personal information from you, and, that way, you can protect your personal privacy during the exchange.
In this guide CalyxOS 5.2.0 (which runs Android 14) is used for demonstration.
Usage
Setup region, currency, and a wallet address
Start the LocalMonero app. In order to receive your purchased moneros, you need to add a Monero address of yours to the app. First, generate a new Monero wallet address on your Monero wallet. You can scan the QR-code of this address from your computer and pass it to your phone. Copy the scanned QR-code's contents to your phone's clipboard. Then, inside the LocalMonero app, on the bottom menu tap on Wallet > Address book. On the new page, tap on the + button on the lower right side of the screen.
LocalMonero will give you an input field for you to insert your Monero address from your phone's clipboard. Paste it into the Receiving XMR address field. You can insert a tag to that address in the Label (optional) field, in order to help yourself distinguishing your addresses. Next, tap on the Continue button. LocalMonero will show you the address and the labels you inserted. Make sure the receiving address is correct! Otherwise, the seller will send your moneros to a wrong address, and you won't be getting them in your own wallet.
Go back to the main user interface of the app, and tap on the region settings button on the upper right side of the screen. Select your fiat currency and the country. In this guide, TRY and Turkey options will be demonstrated.
After you set the fiat currency and country options, tap on the Apply button.
Take a look at the offers and pick one
Once you get back to the main user interface of the app, you will be presented with the available ads for you. Take a look at the available offers, and pick one of them. You will see the details of that ad. Here,
- XMR Price: shows the fiat price of Monero, in that ad
- Trade limits: shows the seller's upper and lower limits for the trade
- Payment method: shows the buyer's method of paying the seller
On the same screen, Terms of trade field shows the seller's conditions for buying Monero from them. Make sure you read those terms, and agree with them, before initiating the trade.
On the same screen, you can tap on the seller's username, and see statistics for his past activity. Here, Trades shows you the number of transactions the seller has completed before you, Feedback shows the percentage of happy customers for this seller, and Typical trade finalization time shows you the amount of time your trade with that seller probably will take.
If you are happy with the reputation of this seller, tap on the Buy button on the previous screen for the ad.
Contact the seller and purchase XMR
After you tap on Buy button, LocalMonero app will ask you how much Monero you want to buy. Enter the amount in your fiat currency terms (TRY in this case), and then tap on the Send a trade request button. LocalMonero app will, once again, present you the terms of the trade. Review them one last time, and tap on the Agree to terms and continue button.
On the next screen, LocalMonero will ask you to enter an address for you to receive your newly-purchased moneros. Here, we will insert the address we introduced to the app in the first step of this guide. For this, tap on the address book icon. See the address you've previously given to the app, and then tap on the Paste button. Then, tap on the Continue button.
A new screen will show up, and you will see a Trade created notification up on top. You will find yourself inside a chat screen that you share with the seller. At this point, wait for the seller to accept your trade request. Do not make any payment as long as you see the Waiting for the seller to fund the trade status in the chat interface.
Once the seller accepts your trade request, you will see the Pay the seller message on the chat interface. Now, you can make the payment to the seller.
In order to see the details of how you should make the payment to the seller, tap on the triple button menu on the upper right hand side of the screen. Then, tap on the Payment info option.
In this guide, I will be using a payment method which lets me send my paper cash bills from a supermarket checkout counter to the seller's bank account. That way, I won't be giving any of my personally identifiable information neither to the seller nor to the supermarket.
After I make the payment, obeying the seller's terms, I write a specific URL address onto the receipt paper, take a picture of it using the in-app camera of LocalMonero and deliver its picture to the seller inside the chat interface. Right after that, I tap on the I have paid button inside the chat interface. LocalMonero will ask you to confirm your payment done declaration. Tap on the Confirm button.
At this point the seller will send you the moneros you've just purchased. Until the seller signals inside the chat interface that he has sent you the moneros, the status of the trade will be Waiting for seller to confirm your payment. While you wait for the seller, check out your Monero wallet that will be receiving them. On the incoming payments of your Monero wallet, you should see your moneros arriving. Once the seller confirms in the LocalMonero app that he has sent moneros to your address, the trade status will turn into Trade finalized. You will have your moneros in your wallet.
If you wish to buy from the same seller again in the future, you can see your past trade history under Trades > Completed.
Conclusion
In this guide I showed you how to buy Monero using LocalMonero app. For this, first you entered an address that belongs to your own Monero wallet into the LocalMonero app. Then, you picked your country and the fiat currency that you will pay the seller with. Next, you scrolled through the available offers, and picked one that you were comfortable with. After that, you contacted the seller, made the payment, and got your moneros in your wallet.
Using LocalMonero you can support your local Monero sellers, and also you can avoid the privacy-wise invasive and abusive Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures of your local centralized exchanges.
