Lastly, using Tor Browser you can reach hidden websites and hidden services that live completely on the onion network.
In this guide CalyxOS 5.2.0 (which runs Android 14) is used for demonstration.
Setup
Install the software
Start the fdroid app store. Tap on the search button on the lower right side of the fdroid screen. On the search bar, type in tor browser. You will NOT find Tor Browser app. You need to change a few settings on fdroid first:
- as I showed you on orbot guide, you have to enable the Guardian Project Official Releases repository in fdroid
- you need to enable a few additional antifeature options
For the first of these requirements, consult the orbot guide, and follow the steps that enables the Guardian Project Official Releases repository.
For the second requirement: tap on the Some results were hidden based on your antifeature settings message.
On the settings menu that appears, scroll down, and tap on the Include anti-feature apps button. On the options menu enable the following options:
- Not Safe for Work
- Other Anti-features
Then, navigate back to the fdroid main screen. Pull down the screen and refresh the local application list cache. Go back to the search bar, and type tor browser search term. This time, you will see Tor Browser app in the results. Tap on the Tor Browser for Android item.
On Tor Browser app's page, tap on the INSTALL button. Wait for the installation process to complete.
Android will ask you whether to install Tor Browser or not. Tap on the INSTALL button.
Run the software
Start the Tor Browser app from your applications drawer. When Tor Browser starts, it will display a screen like below. There, tap on the CONNECT button and wait for Tor Browser to establish connection.
After the connection is establised, tap on the triple-dot menu button on the lower right side of the screen, and pick the Settings option. There, under Privacy and security header, enable the Prioritize .onion sites option. Next, navigate back to Tor Browser's main screen.
